How To Choose a Glass Restoration Motorized Polisher

When choosing a polisher for glass stain removal, there are a number of factors which one must consider. 

While price is often the first consideration of many prudent business ventures, we urge you to take into consideration a number of other factors first - not just the sticker price. While you may be able to find a polisher for glass at a price point of about $150 USD, generally models in the $450 USD range are much better for large scale projects.

Some points to consider when selecting a glass polisher.
  • How long will the polisher last?
  • Is it a variable speed polisher?
  • Is it ergonomically pleasant to work with?
  • Will the polisher bog down if pressure is applied?
  • Will the polisher easily overheat?

First, how long will this glass polishing tool last.  There are a number of factors which go in to determining the lifespan of a glass polisher.  For example, can the carbon brushes which make the motor spin be replaced? Where can you get parts or send the unit for repair? Is the unit durable enough to sustain a drop of 30 to 50 feet?  How is the cord attached to the unit? can it be replaced if it is cut? Will the unit shut off if it overheats, or will it run until the internal components melt? Is the polisher water resistant?

In our experience glass restoration projects require significant amounts of labor in the form of polishing glass. This means that a glass polisher will be running, hopefully, 8 hours a day for the duration of the project. Depending on the size of the glass restoration project, this could be a period of months.  

We recommend the use of a variable speed polisher so that you can have better control over the how fast the pad is turning. If the pad is moving too fast, the Glass Resurfacer Final Polish will overheat on the window, and polishing times will suffer. Alternately if the glass polisher is moving too slowly, it will not generate enough friction to efficiently produce stock removal of the glass surface. 

Further, it is important to ensure that the polisher operates at moderate speeds while producing high torque. Typically polishers achieve this through gear reduction. Torque is important when polishing glass in order to remove glass stains, because they will come out faster if you are applying pressure to the glass. 

Generally the best speeds for glass polishing will be somewhere between 800 and 1250 RPM, depending on the amount of pressure being applied to the glass, the temperature of the glass, the type of glass, and the severity of the stain. 

Finally, the weight and design of the glass polisher are an important consideration when choosing a polisher for your glass restoration needs.   While the cost of a polisher may be 150 USD to 400 USD, the cost of technician fatigue can exceed the cost of the tool within a week or two. 

This is especially evident in the case of a difficult to grip machine.  Polishing glass relies on even pressure to the pad so that it makes full contact with the glass, and does not bounce around. Further, a polisher that is too heavy will result in the technician removing the machine from the glass more than is necessary in order to rest the arms, or adjust the suspended platform to decrease reach.
